Foley is the sound of humans. Footsteps (human or animal), leather coats, pen strokes, flying debris, cup pick-ups/put-downs, fist fights etc. The recording of Foley is the most demanding, complex, and fun of all engineering.
The level or gain of the microphones used for Foley recording is often very high, and requires that a Foley engineer be precise, technical, creative, and versatile all at the same time.

Outpost Studios' custom Foley
pits feature dirt, gravel, hay, sand, marble,
brick,
slate, linoleum, wood, and three different concrete surfaces

Our Foley warehouse has a wide variety of Foley props,
including props from the collection of artist Marnie Moore and the Saul Zaentz film center.
Why Foley?
At Outpost we have hosted the most creative and capable Foley talent in the bay area. Ellen Heuer, Marnie Moore, Jennifer Myers, Jana Vance, Leslie Bloom, Dian Langlois, and Ronni Brown are among this creative fraternity. Dave Nelson has engineered these demanding sessions and is also a seasoned Foley editor. Dave pioneered the act of recording Foley directly into ProTools- which has since become the industry standard due to its speed and versatility.
Outpost was chosen by Focus Films as the Foley studio for Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation. After tracking Foley for the film, the Saul Zaentz film center donated their entire Foley collection to Outpost Studios. Jim Lively regularly records Foley in Outpost as well for the animated series, Happy Tree Friends.
